But curators must get creative with how they present, if what they present, in plastic terms, may not excite. I interviewed him at an American embassy event in Ljubljana, Slovenia, when he explained that it's curatorially easy to have a blockbuster of Impressionist paintings or to stick a Vermeer on the wall and draw the crowds. One of them is Brent Glass, until recently the director of the Smithsonian Museum of American History. ![]() So what do you as a curator do when the material in your collection is more interesting than spectacular? To find out, I spoke to several prominent names in the field. American museumgoers are not as interested in an enlightening, didactic exhibition with important, if not particularly visually striking or much-hyped objects, on display for which they really need to read all the wall copy, use the audio guide and perhaps even buy the thick catalog in order to get the most out of the carefully curated, years-in-the-making exhibition. All those other paintings, not to mention the little pop-up exhibit of Tiepolo drawings or what have you, usually get short shrift. But there are many theatergoers who see "Hamlet" in order to wait for the lines they already know and will recognize (“To be or not to be! Woo hoo!”). First off, let it be said that such a small percentage of the general public goes to museums or Shakespeare plays, that we must doff our hats to them for making the effort. It requires a different, more leisurely mindset to wander without a primary target, to give yourself the breathing room to read all the wall copy and hand yourself over to the well-meaning curators.Īmericans in particular - although I’ve noticed this with foreign audiences, too - tend to treat seeing art like attending Shakespeare plays. I’d rather travel on an art historical pilgrimage to Volterra, Italy, to see Rosso Fiorentino’s "Deposition" or an excursion beyond the center of Dijon, France, into the psychiatric hospital to admire Claus Sluter’s "Well of Moses" than spend hours in a museum seeing dozens of works that I may not remember. To be fair, although I’m a professor of art history, I’m a bit like this, too. While a small, passionate percentage of museum visitors are there to learn and will plunge deeply and broadly into a collection, most aim for the “big guns.” They want to say that they saw Whistler’s mother or the Mona Lisa, maybe grab a quick selfie in front of it (if the museum guards are looking the other way and they remember to turn off the flash) and then head for the cafeteria. We want to see an artwork, even just one focal work, that has been hyped, that we’ve heard about, that dazzles. In that film, Rowan Atkinson’s bumbling museum guard is mistaken for a famous Whistler scholar and left alone with the wildly expensive, high-visibility artwork that is the focal point of a garish, nouveau riche museum: Whistler’s "Portrait of the Artist’s Mother." The results, involving inadvisable sneezing and subsequent amateur conservation attempts, are funny, but the movie is biting and right on the money - smarter than it looks. The film used many of the ideas and skits from the original television series. If the movie "Bean" has taught us anything (and what hasn’t it taught us really?), it’s that American museums and the museumgoing public will line up, go out of its way, to view something spectacular, whether there's much in the way of educational value. ![]() Rowan Atkinson is truly at his best as the loveable and goofy character. To be honest, I also thought the TV series was funny and I was really hoping for a full length movie. ![]() Even though it broke a rule (Bean speaks a bit differently than the TV series, it's still freshly squeezed comedy and fun for the whole family. Tavern Masters, as a base game, can be simply replaced by flipping a coin and determining a winner. Providing a variety of food or drink ensures you will have repeat customers to your tavern. The Tavern Menu expansion provides a deck of variant play rules, with different game end conditions and modifiers that can affect gameplay. The Dirty Deeds expansions provide for player interaction, adding an extra phase before Counting the Till where tavern masters can mess with their competition in a variety of ways. The Dockside expansion adds a Song and Port deck, giving you new options and card powers that correspond to a seaside tavern. The game ends when a player earns 20 gold, making them the most successful tavern master! If your tavern’s offerings and a patron’s likes match up, they will stick around in your tableau, otherwise they are removed. At the end of the night is the Counting the Till, where you earn gold for each patron in your tavern. These patron cards also have special powers and abilities that can be activated when played, granting you options to play extra cards or earn extra gold. Once the Night Phase begins and the bar opens, patron cards are played, so long as certain requirements for each patron are met. Upgrades to your staff and tavern goods occur during the Day Phase. You can also trade cards with your opponents during the Day Phase. ![]() During the Day Phase, you purchase and play cards from your hand that represent various foods, drinks, and games your bar can stock to attract patrons, as well as employees with varying powers and abilities. ![]() Tavern Masters is played over a series of rounds, representing a day’s business at your tavern. Helen taught reading to kids who needed extra help with it, mainly in a trailer in the parking lot of a Catholic high school. They struck me as maybe the nicest people on the planet. He and my brother were still roommates, but this time in a two-bedroom apartment in Manhattan, trying to navigate young adulthood.īack when Bobby was still alive, I would occasionally see the McIlvaines. But thanks to a happy accident of timing, my brother got to spend his nights chattering away with this singular kid, an old soul with a snappity-popping mind.Įight years later, almost to the day, a different accident of timing would take Bobby’s life. My brother often thinks about what a small miracle that was: If he’d arrived just 30 minutes earlier, the suite would have been an isomer of itself, with the kids all shuffled in an entirely different configuration. ![]() On my brother’s first day of college, he was assigned to a seven-person suite, and because he arrived last, Bobby became his roommate. Here I should note that I know and love the McIlvaine family. (Danna Singer original photo courtesy of the McIlvaine family) Bobby’s body was found in the wreckage of the Twin Towers. Today, she can’t so much as recall Jen’s last name.īobby McIlvaine, with his parents, Helen and Bob Sr., at his Princeton graduation in 1997. “She became a nonperson to me,” Helen told me. Helen and her husband never saw Jen again. If Helen wanted to discuss this matter any further, she’d have to do so in the presence of Jen’s therapist. Shortly after, she wrote Helen a letter with her final answer: No, just no. When she finally left the McIlvaines’ house for good, Jen slammed the door behind her, got into her car, and burst into tears. Helen, Jen pointed out, already had Bobby’s other belongings, other diaries, the legal pads. The requests escalated, as did the rebuffs. If Bobby’s describing a tree, just give me the description of the tree. All she asked was that Jen selectively photocopy it. Helen was careful to explain that she didn’t need the object itself. Helen had plenty of chances to bring it up, because Jen lived with the McIlvaines for a time after September 11, unable to tolerate the emptiness of her own apartment. Over and over, she asked Jen to see that final diary. “One missing piece,” she told me recently, “was like not having an arm.” How, Helen fumed, could her husband not want to know Bobby’s final thoughts-ones he may have scribbled as recently as the evening of September 10? And how could he not share her impulse to take every last molecule of what was Bobby’s and reconstruct him? It raised the prospect, however brief, of literary resurrection. In that sense, the diary wasn’t like a recovered photograph. Here was an opportunity to savor Bobby’s company one last time, to hear his voice, likely saying something new. “This was a decision we were supposed to make together,” his wife, Helen, told him. It was a reflex that he almost instantly came to regret. Could she keep it?īobby’s father didn’t think. Jen took one look and quickly realized that her name was all over it. One object in that pile glowed with more meaning than all the others: Bobby’s very last diary. Maybe, he told them, there was material in there that they could use in their eulogies. And so he began distributing the yellow legal pads, the perfect-bound diaries: to Bobby’s friends to Bobby’s girlfriend, Jen, to whom he was about to propose. Less than a week after his death, Bobby’s father had to contend with that pitiless still life of a desk. But inside, the guy was a sage and a sap-philosophical about disappointments, melancholy when the weather changed, moony over girlfriends. ![]() To the outside world, Bobby, 26, was a charmer, a striver, a furnace of ambition. But the diaries told a different kind of story. The yellow pads appeared to have the earnest beginnings of two different novels. He’d kept the diaries since he was a teenager, and they were filled with the usual diary things-longings, observations, frustrations-while the legal pads were marbled with more variety: aphoristic musings, quotes that spoke to him, stabs at fiction. W hen Bobby McIlvaine died on September 11, 2001, his desk at home was a study in plate tectonics, coated in shifting piles of leather-bound diaries and yellow legal pads. I use iFlicks and put these same files and it was able to pull the new data from TVDB or wherever it gets it and was able to tag them with new data. If infuse is using TVDB to get the data, I think this should be a supported naming format but I could be wrong. I was very much hoping this could be added into a future version? Because if I use local metadata, the shows end up in “other” and it also does not look very good. Infuse will not fetch any meta data for any show I have tried with this default structure. Show Name/Season/01 episode 1.ext and so on. Right now iTunes manages my library and the naming is as follows. Update: Trakt calls it “Money Heist (Netflix)”.Hi, I was hoping you could add support for fetching metadata on files that have been organized via iTunes. With shows having the same name you add the year as in “Battlestar Galactica (1978)”, can I rename this show to “La Casa de Papel (Netflix)”? TVDB overcame this by adding a “choice of airing dates”: Antenna 3 or Netflix? Obviously the latter is my choice, but how do I tell Infusse to go for Netflix and leave the Antenna 3 airing dates alone? Now there is season 3… Oops, is it season 2 in original order? Or is it season 3? And if so, what happened to season 2? After broadcasting they sold it to Netflix and Netfilx edited it so the single season became two seasons of more episodes with shorter durations per episode. Both the metadata suppliers for Infuse sticks to their gun that the first time it is aired is the one that will be listed, but with this show there is some problems forthcoming.Īntenna 3 broadcasted it first, so the Spanish channel got the data. So, I have this series (La Casa De Papel) and it’s been a huge discussion throughout the interwebz on how the season numbering goes. It would be REALLY nice for Infuse to support this option. So the titles for each of those parts could be added together with a separator and that would give you an appropriate name for episode. However, the DVD order on these shows lists them as 2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3,…etc. But regardless of where your files are from, there’s almost no chance you’ve got each of them in individual files. ![]() TheTVDB’s main episode lists often have these as individual entries. Many kids shows have multiple shorter stories in each episode. But for LOTS of kids shows it’s more complicated than that. Obviously if it’s just an issue of order, then files can be renamed. The metadata that’s loaded is ordered in the the episodes aired which was messed up thanks to the idiots that …īut nothing on ETA. I have all of my files numbered and named in the order they appear on the DVD since it was their intended viewing order (the show makes more sense this way too ). ![]() ![]() Is there any way to specify the metadata info per episode for a TV series for the episode ordering? I’ve run into where the metadata that’s pulled for the show doesn’t match my ordering.Ī good example of this is Firefly. Here we have discussed a number of tools based on the strengths and weaknesses. ![]() Yes, for all these cases you absolutely need to use a NTFS for Mac tool to make your life much simpler, and so that you can focus more on your work rather than which file system is used by Windows or Mac. Or if you are trying to have the best of both Mac and Windows and have to constantly move files between the Windows PC and the Mac (like I do). Same goes for users who are trying to migrate from Windows to MacOS, but cannot move their existing files and folders from Windows which uses NTFS. So, if you have an external hard drive where you save all your data, you will not be able to write to that external hard drive from your Mac without the help of these NTFS for Mac tools. This is because Apple's Macs only come with support for reading NTFS drive, but when it comes to writing on a NTFS drive, the MacOS cannot do it without the help of a NTFS for Mac tool. If you have just switched from Windows to Mac, you might be having trouble transferring files to NTFS-formatted hard drives used on Windows. Unlike it's counterparts FAT32 and HPFS, the NTFS focuses majorly on performance of your storage by using better compression, enhanced security through the use of user permissions not only on the Windows PC but the individual files and folders stored in it, reliability by ensuring consistency of the files in case of a power outage, proper utilization of disk space using disk quotas, and maintaining the log of all files using the MFT thereby ensuring that a detailed audit is maintained for all the files that have been deleted, moved, or modified from the hard drive. It has been like this starting with Windows NT 3.1 first introduced in 1993. ![]() If you have used a Windows PC, you must have seen that NTFS is the default file system there. NTFS, short for New Technology File System, is a proprietary file system used by all the modern Windows operating systems including Windows 11. In this review, we will discuss everything you need to know about NTFS, why its best for you to use a NTFS tool for Mac, and what are the best NTFS for Mac tools available today. But first, let me provide a few more details since this is not the only scenario where you might have to write on an NTFS drive on a Mac. However, The advent of NTFS for Mac software makes everything so much easier, and that's what I am about to share with you today. macOS starts to read the NTFS-formatted drives but not write files to NTFS drive, in other words, you can only view the files in NTFS drive on a macOS, you can't write, edit, delete, copy them in anyway. I juggle between the two for work purposes since it is easier to edit these videos on Mac but I have to deliver those files through my Windows PC.īecause of this, even if I don't want to, I have to write files on Microsoft's NTFS drive, but NTFS reading and writing is not supported on a Mac device, so, it's too hard for me to use NTFS drive on a Mac. ![]() For example, I edit videos for a living, I have a Windows PC that I use for work since my organization doesn't like to invest in Mac, and I also have a Mac that I personally own.
